The fare cap is being introduced to make bus travel cheaper for millions of passengers, cutting a typical single fare by around a third. It was announced during the first week in office of the person leading the policy, suggesting it is being treated as an early priority for the new administration.

By lowering the cost of single tickets, the move aims to ease everyday travel costs for people who rely on buses. Cheaper fares could also encourage more people to choose buses over cars for regular journeys.
