The Whys turns public news into plain questions and answers. Most of what you read here starts life as a government announcement, which we rewrite into a short “Why...?” explainer. This page sets out where that material comes from and the licence that lets us reuse it.

Open Government Licence

Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. That licence lets us copy, adapt, and publish the material, including commercially, as long as we credit the source. This page and the line in our footer are that credit.

Where our stories come from

We only reuse feeds whose terms allow a rewritten, commercial version. Right now every active source is UK government content published on GOV.UK, from these departments and agencies:
